Richard is also an experienced Java and open source software engineer,
working primarily for publishers. He was contracted to New Scientist
for five years as technical leader of a small team tasked with implementing
newscientist.com, sciencejobs.com, and the subscription-based 10
year archive of the magazine. One especially relevant project was
the automatic collect of recruitment advertising from US academic
institutions for inclusion in the sciencejobs.com database, making
thousands of US vacancies searchable.
More recently Richard has been working within the Ford Motor Company
to build a system to meet a European directive on provided access
to technical vehicle information on-line. Both of these projects
involved providing search facilities and data classification. Prior
to these projects he was employed by a small city firm focussed
on data visualization, and before that he worked for, and was trained
by, the software house Logica. He gained a DPhil from the University
of Sussex in the area of machine learning.
